    We shall support 100 5- to 7-year-olds in primary schools in Newport with higher than average Pupil Development Grants. The teachers will select ten children in each class who will benefit the most from the weekly online reading lessons.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

We are seeking funding to provide 100 disadvantaged children in Newport with weekly online reading sessions. We will recruit corporate and student volunteers to read online with the children in the classroom from January to December 2025. Using our bespoke, secure platform, this 1:1 support will help to transform the children’s reading confidence and ability. We shall provide training, DBS checks and ongoing support for the volunteers. A laptop and headset will be provided for each class.

To give children in Newport the literacy skills and reading confidence they need to thrive.

To improve the education outcomes and employment prospects for Newport children.

We want to extend our programme across Wales to help all struggling young readers in the region.

Project Activities

  • From July 2024 we shall enlist qualifying Newport primary schools to participate in the programme.

  • July-December 2024 - recruitment, DBS checks and training for 100 online reading volunteers.

  • January to December 2025 - 100 volunteers will read online weekly with 100 children in Newport.

  • In December 2024 we shall provide each participating class with a laptop and headset.

  • From September 2024 we shall recruit a local programme manager to train and support the teachers.
