Beneficiaries

  • Children / Young People

    The workshops will be held in local community centres targetting 120 children and young people including 20 NEETs (Not in Education, Employment, Training) who will take these transferrable skills to other areas such as volunteering, employment & life

  • Elderly / Old People

    The project will visit community groups working with over 50s adults to use African drumming as entertainment & fun while exploring African culture and linking it to Newport heritage and culture, for instance Welsh folk music and dance.

  • Other Charities or Voluntary Bodies

    The activity will be extended to local theatre companies and the Riverfront Arts Theatre.

  • Number of beneficiaries - 200

    120 children & young people and 80 over 50s adults

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

The activity is to promote African Arts and culture among chidren and young people and adults which will be linked to Black History Month, Pill Carnival, Caerleon festival and Maindee festival. The workshops will be delivered in youth clubs, community centres and University of South Wales. African drumming & mbira are educational and entertaining & fun while building positive mental health. The workshops will be led by experienced and highly skilled drummers & mbira players based in Newport.

Activity goals

Participants will gain confidence and self esteem through learning to play drums & mbira

the workshops will be a social capital for participants to meet new friends and combat loneliness

The beneficiries will take part in Newport festivals & carnivals while promoting Newport culture

Activity Actions

  • The project will run 12 workshops at youth clubs and 6 at over 50 s groups and 2 at University.

  • The beneficiries will be taught to play the mbira (African thumb piano)

  • The participants will play mbira & drums at the procession of Maindee festival & Pill Carnival

  • The workshops will be recorded and shared on socila media to promote Newport as a cultural city

  • The young people and children will be joined with over 50s to create an integenerational activity
