Collaborating with a well-known Welsh personality, and by increasing numbers and enhancing visitors' experiences we'll make the ship an even more attractive venue for everyone in Newport and beyond.
Young visitors including schoolchildren will benefit from a readily comprehensible audio description which will enrich their education and their appreciation of Newport's heritage. We'll create a children's commentary next year if this one succeeds.
The audio guides will be especially helpful to the hard of hearing and people will be able to follow the tour at their own pace.
The technology will enable more and larger groups to be accommodated, without putting undue stress on the volunteer guides. They will be freed up to supplement the commentaries with information tailored to the special interests of the groups.
Huge regional population incl. visitors, groups & open days
With c. 3000 regular, special event and group visitors to the Ship Centre last year, and numbers growing annually, the provision of audio-guides is essential to supplement and help the small group of enthusiastic volunteer guides, enabling them to welcome more visitors and a wider range of visitors, such as those with hearing, visual or mobility challenges. We will engage ATS Heritage, to provide the technology, write the script and record the English and Welsh commentaries.
For year one, open 9 months p.a., hopefully more later.
We encourage and observe visitor comments, retain & analyse feedback
