PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Parent Power brings parents and carers together to tackle inequality and drive positive change through training in leadership and community organising. Newport Parent Power, launched in September 2024, empowers local parents to support young people into higher education. We are asking Newport Council to support the group’s second year, helping it grow and reach more families across the city.

More young people in Newport from underrepresented backgrounds progressing to higher education.

Parents have the knowledge, confidence and leadership skills to support their child’s education.

Strengthen community engagement and drive systemic change in local education policies.

Project Activities

  • Group Meetings, every 6 weeks: Provide higher education guidance and community organising training

  • 1-2-1 Meetings: Build relationships, develop parent leadership, and support engagement

  • University Trips: Facilitate campus visits for parents and students to increase aspiration

  • Workshops: Offer sessions with higher education professionals on application processes

  • Campaign Events: Engage parents with key decision-makers to influence educational policies

MONEY We need funding to support us to continue paying the community organiser who runs the Newport Parent Power chapter. We are seeking £12,313 to support the running of Newport Parent Power until March 2026. Flexible Community organisers are critical to the success of Parent Power. This donation will enable us to engage more parents.
