Newport Live Positive Futures - Operation Bang - youth engagement / ASB diversion events

Beneficiaries

  • Children / Young People

    Children and Young People, living in areas of high crime / ASB, will be engaged and positively supported - in the build up to , during, and afterwards through mentoring and support of respected / trusted Positive Futures youth workers.

  • The General Public / Mankind

    By providing engagement and diversion of children and young people in communities with positive activities/events, the general public will be kept safe from ASB and crime on estates (e.g. gangs, throwing fireworks, fire setting).

  • Elderly / Old People

    A reduction in children and young people on the streets, even on one evening during this peak period will be of benefit and comfort to elderly people and old people in communities and estates at high risk.

  • Other Charities or Voluntary Bodies

    Gwent Police, South Wales Fire & Rescue Service, 3rd sector org's we work with (e.g. NYCA, GAP, Urban Circle,) as well as NCC teams. Supports reduction in offences, engagement of children and young people at a peak time for blue light services.

  • Number of beneficiaries - 300

    Approx 50 young people, across six events + 1:1 mentoring

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Working with community safety partners (Gwent Police, SWFRS, Newport City Council) Newport Live's Positive Futures small team of 'trusted' youth & sport workers, will LEAD a programme of engagement and 'added value' youth events at Halloween and Bonfire Oct peak ASB/Crime periods in Pillgwenlly, St Julians, Alway, Bettws, Ringland, and Duffryn to support a multi-agency approach to positively engage, mentor, and deter children and young people in Newport during this challenging time.

Project Outcome Targets

Through positive youth engagement, children are diverted away from negative behaviours, reducing ASB

Through positive youth engagement opportunities, children have increased opportunities to be healthy

Through positive engagement & mentoring, CYP improve decision making, accessing trusted role models

Project Activities

  • We have established relationships with Newport schools therefore are well known and trusted by CYP.

  • We have established relationships in the 6 communities (ongoing work), these peak events add value.

  • Positive Futures staff are trauma informed, youth work trained, sports coaches, & health experienced

  • Added value events will include VR headsets, smoothie bike, inflatable shoot out, music / DJ, sports

  • Added value events will include drinks, healthy snacks, food/meal, and snacks to take away if needed
