PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Get Gigging! aims to reach young, aspiring musicians from some of Newport’s most deprived areas and equip them with the practical knowledge, confidence and inspiration to do exactly that: get gigging. Through a series of mentor sessions with industry professionals and a showcase performance opportunity at Newport's Corn Exchange music venue, young people will gain invaluable skills not just for music careers but for life.

Project Outcome Targets

Recruit a group of young people from diverse backgrounds

To upskill participants to confidently continue in their career development

Build confidence and competence. and complete the programme – including final performance

Project Activities

  • Workshop 1: Preparing for the gig (instrument repair and care, where you can rehearse locally)

  • Workshop 2: You’ve arrived at the venue; now what? (how to soundcheck, how to tune your instrument)

  • Performance 101-building a stage persona, what to do if something goes wrong, online presence

  • Mentorship with Local Band – support sessions with local gigging musicans

  • Perfromance at The Corn Exchange! Putting it all into practice
