Our History

  • Raven House was established in 1994 and is one of the longest-serving food banks in Wales. Raven House is based in Somerton, one of the most deprived areas of Newport, Wales. We run a food bank and charity furniture shop, providing free emergency food, furniture and support to local people who are in crisis.

Beneficiaries

  • People in poverty

We support people in our community who are in poverty and crisis. We provide support to people who walk in and also those referred by local agencies.

  • Homeless & ex convicts

We work with agencies to help the homeless when they are housed with the provision of furniture and food. We meet with people and help in other ways too such as by inviting them to our events such as warm meals at Christmas.

  • Unemployed

Many people that we support are unemployed. We help people by providing them with the basics needed for daily life so that they can focus on building a future. We provide additional support such as providing them with clothing to attend interviews.

  • Adults

We work with adults in the community that need our support. These could be individuals or parents of families. Some are referred to us by agencies and some walk in to our charity shop.

  • Children / Young People

We work with children and young people in our community who have very little. We visit schools and when families are referred to us, we work to support them by providing food, furniture, toys or inviting them to our events such as Christmas parties.

  • Marginalised or vulnerable groups

We support people in our community isolated from society, lack of access to opportunities, living in high-risk areas, women, the elderly, disabled, variety of cultural backgrounds without English or Welsh as a first language, drug/alcohol issues etc

  • The General Public / Mankind

We provide to support to everyone in our community who needs it where we can. We will always listen to their needs and provide support or signpost them to someone who can. This is often important as people don't know where to turn.

Our Vision for a better future

  • Our vision is a community where everyone has access to the necessities of life and the opportunity to thrive. We want people to break the cycle of poverty and live their lives independent of support. We want to make a positive difference to our community during times of need and crisis, by providing free emergency food, furniture and support.
