Our History

  • Opportunity International was founded in 1971 by visionaries Al Whittaker and David Bussau. As one of the first charities to recognise the benefits of offering financial services to those living in poverty, we forged partnerships and innovated to tackle this issue. In over 50 years, we have served more than 10 million families in over 20 countries.

Areas of Operation

  • Malawi

Beneficiaries

  • The General Public / Mankind

  • Adults

Through our Roots of Change project, we aim to empower 12,000 women in Ghana and The DRC. We have and continue to provide gender awareness training to communities, equip women with knowledge to improve farm yields and efficiency and challenge norms.

  • People with Disabilities

We increase economic empowerment and financial inclusion of 3,700 people living with disabilities. We create a safe, accessible banking environment, help them access loans/savings accounts and provide disability awareness and financial training.

  • Children / Young People

We deliver education projects to children through school clubs and income generating activities. These teach about essential life and financial skills, to include sexual health and hygiene. Our recent focus has been on girls' education.

Our Vision for a better future

  • Our vision is a world in which all people, regardless of religion, race, ethnicity or gender, have the opportunity to achieve a life free from poverty, with dignity and purpose. We seek a future where the most marginalised have the financial skills and economic choice to build sustainable livelihoods for themselves, their family and their community

Our goals to make a difference

  • Eradicate global poverty and promote decent lives with economic opportunities for all

  • Deliver support to 125,000 smallholder famers in sub-Saharan Africa

  • Help 100,000 children go to/stay in school and improve girls' lives through education.

  • Increase family income, create/sustain 60,000 jobs and boost household wealth to improve livelihoods
