Organisation Overview

Areas of Interest

  • Girls and women

Our History

  • Born out of a community partnership in 2000. This led to partnership impact visits from the UK to Lesotho and from Lesotho to the UK. Registered as a charity in 2008 with a beautiful but alas too challenging a name Khokanyana - Phiri. Our new name conveys our experiences of many years, namely when you connect with Africa you receive her gift!

Areas of Operation

  • Zimbabwe

Beneficiaries

  • Nature

3 billion people each day cook their meal on open fires. Trees, shrubs & undergrowth are used as fuel. This is hazardous to the environment releasing CO2 into the atmosphere, destroys habitats & leaves soils exposed to erosion. Enter Wonderbags!

  • The General Public / Mankind

Climate change is making food production more difficult. Those on greatest need are most affected. By introducing conservation agriculture agriculture & permaculture principles food can be grown successfully & in a restorative way. It takes change!

  • Children / Young People

Many girls in Africa are unable to access schooling as they are harvesting wood & water & spend hours preparing the daily meal over a smoky fire. This lack of opportunity leads to depression and the inhaled smoke leads to illness & premature death.

Our Vision for a better future

  • We wish to see a future where many of the poorer community members in Africa become more self reliant & take care & stewardship of their environments. Where many more young girls access schooling and cooking is done without harm. Where food can be grown in a restorative manner through conservation agriculture using permaculture principles.

Our goals to make a difference

  • Prevent premature death through smoke inhalation via the introduction of Wonderbags - slow cookers.

  • Teach and demonstrate conservation agriculture & permaculture via the development of a teaching farm

  • Teach local farmers suffering crop failure & soil erosion conservation agriculture via outreach prog

  • Lift people from poverty via employment making washable sanitary pads for local women & school girls

  • Enable many more young girls to access schooling and learn about their human rights.
