Our History

  • West African Empowerment Association was birthed by a group of West African women who saw a gap in community engagement space for Africans in Wales. We aim to bring together Africans across Wales to connect, celebrate culture and foster community cohesion and shared diaspora lived experiences to help create a sense of belonging in Wales.

Areas of Operation

  • Wales: Newport

Beneficiaries

  • The General Public / Mankind

Fostering community cohesion is at the heart of WAEA. We want a space to share diaspora lived experiences to help demystify cultural myths and create better learning experiences about Africa and culture.

  • Children / Young People

Promote role models for young people in Newport through a series of events, workshops, training sessions, and traditional arts and crafts displays. We want to ensure young people can see representation in all echelons of society.

  • People Of A Particular Ethnic Or Racial Origin

Creating the platform to raise the aspirations of Africans in Newport and the wider community.

  • Elderly / Old People

Bridge the gap between the elderly and young through chat forums to allow for an exchange of lived experiences and celebrate their stories.

Our Vision for a better future

  • Our vision for WAEA is a Wales where cultural diversity will be embraced as a way of life. We want people to be bold and confident to celebrate their culture and heritage without facing barriers to showcasing culture. We want a safe space where people can learn about their culture and also create new lasting connections with the wider community.

Our goals to make a difference

  • Celebrate African culture in Newport by delivering a series of events like food fairs, drumming and networking opportunities for young people, parents/children.

  • Promote role models for youths in Newport through cultural events, and traditional arts and crafts.

  • Host talent-building workshops - public speaking forums, CV-building workshops, dance and performing arts sessions to foster integration and build confidence.

  • Support refugees and Asylum seekers in Newport to better integrate within the communities and connect them with support platforms to access helpful information.

  • Establish a West African Food court in the Newport market. This is to promote West African cuisine and appeal to a diverse community.
