Mind in Gwent, in collaboration with the Youth and Play Service at Duffryn Community Centre, will guide young people to transform the centre garden into a welcoming space the whole community can use and benefit from. In consultation, the young people fed back that they lacked a voice and recognition of the benefit they bring to their community in Duffryn. Gardening and being outdoors is known to improve wellbeing. Mind in Gwent will provide group sessions and support to work with the young people on their wellbeing, while they work on creating the garden which will stand as a legacy to their contribution to the community in Duffryn and encourage wider community use of the space.
Our groups help people struggling with mental health to find a useful outlet in a safe and understanding environment. Exploring local history and heritage can help improve mental wellbeing, with a focus on our LGBTQ+ and Migrant communities. We are keen to expand our groups and reach more diverse communities within Newport in need of support. Journaling practise will also form part of the groups as it helps to improve mental wellbeing.
