Our History

  • Young Enterprise (YE) was founded in 1962 by Sir Walter Salomon, who was inspired by the Junior Achievement Programme in the USA, which fostered work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills. YE is founded in the philosophy of ‘learning by doing’ that encourages young people to unlock their potential through practical learning.

Beneficiaries

  • Children / Young People

Children and young people aged from 5-25 years old, typically those attending schools, College or Universities, although we also support young people via youth zones, community centres and Pupil Referral Units (PRUs)

  • People with Disabilities

All young people benefit from our programmes, including those with SEND or who are neurodiverse, who may take part in our Team Programme.

  • Community

The wider community benefits from our work when young people are less likely to become NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) and their employability prospects improve. This can create social and economic benefits for the local community.

Our Vision for a better future

  • The purpose of Young Enterprise’s 2024-2030 Transforming Futures Strategy is to make a measurable, long-term contribution to improving the futures of young people facing barriers to opportunities. We are aiming to increase young people’s engagement in education, improve preparedness for the world of work and help increase social mobility.

How the charity helps

Our goals to make a difference

  • Create more opportunities for young people to apply their learning to address practical, real-world challenges.

  • Integrate YE’s blend of financial and enterprise opportunities, enabling young people to learn to earn and look after their money, making good long term choices

  • Prioritise resources for young people furthest from opportunity/facing the greatest barriers, as this is where we see the biggest impact with young people.
