Parent Power brings parents and carers together to tackle inequality and drive positive change through training in leadership and community organising. Newport Parent Power, launched in September 2024, empowers local parents to support young people into higher education. We are asking Newport Council to support the group’s second year, helping it grow and reach more families across the city.
The benefits of attending a competitive university can be truly life changing, with graduates benefitting from increased earnings, career opportunities and life satisfaction. But access to the most competitive universities is not equal. On The Scholars Programme, less advantaged state school students aged 8-18 develop the knowledge, skills and confidence that they need to access and succeed at the most competitive universities through projects in STEM, arts and humanities and social sciences.
Parent Power is a transformative project run in partnership with Citizens UK which aims to understand the reasons for hyper-local inequalities and create parent/carer communities who can drive local and systemic change.
Less advantaged students are more likely to drop out in their first year of university and less likely to achieve top grades compared to their more advantaged peers. Join the Dots supports less advantaged students to successfully transition from school to university, by providing targeted support and guidance across a student's first year of university.
